Where are the places that you most recommend in Thailand? I'm interested in the outdoors, photography, history |
Travel Info I'll be travelling there for a month by bicycle and other transport. Any great places for taking pictures that are not in the guidebooks? Especially looking to avoid other tourists if I can. Travel Tips The whole area east of Bangkok seems to have been largely overlooked by the guidebooks (the guidebooks I know are LP and RoughGuide) who seem to jump from Bangkok to Pattaya without giving much consideration to what lies between them. There are quite a lot of interesting places to be found there. Spanky has mentioned Sukhothai which a good thing to say as is it very historic. In the eastern part of Thailand, going into Issan, the Angkor temples complexes are sufficiently difficult to get to that not many tourists make it. In this area are;- 1)Phimai - Angkor Temple complex (in there is also the Phimai National Museum and Sai Ngam - Banyan tree). 2) Buriram (Prasat Hin Lhao Phanom Rung Historical Park) - another Angkor Temple complex - bigger than Phimai but harder to get to. 3) Prasat Meuang Tam - not far away from Prasat Rung. Ayutthaya, the former capital of Thailand, is very historic but hundreds of people doing day-trips from Bangkok go there everyday. There are some temples, off the tourist grid, that are worth looking at from an originality/avoiding other tourists point of view; especially outside the old city walls. Don't be too hard on the guidebook writers. I had an interesting conversation with one a few years ago. He explained that his draft had been butchered by the editors on the basis that if the guidebook contained everything he wanted to say it would be too heavy to be portable. Others Have you heard of Koh Phangan? They have a full moon party there..well..every full moon..lol..(so make sure you plan accordingly, I was there 2 yrs ago. It is awesome! Great PHOTO OP on a small Island that besides this one day is pretty remote . We stayed mostly around there and Samui. Khosan rd in Bankok is an absolute treat at night too! It's a full blown street party till about 2 when the cops come around and start kicking everyone out. "Top Hill resort" which is a guest house is where we stayed on Phangan. John and Melika who run the house are awesome. (If you get a chance.) I hate to be vague about the photo ops but to me everything was a good photo:) I was also told by some close Thai friends that I made poor choices about the places I visited. They said Chang Mai (North)and Phi Phi islands(south) are not to be missed. Phi Phi is Tsunamiville. But I think that it is mostly back to normal. (I mean no disrespect) Thailand is a wonderful experience! Get ready to take your shoes off alot and eat some very cheap very awesome food.!! KOh Tao is also remote and beautiful I went diving there. On Samui there is a place called Buddha Magic Garden that is pretty cool for photos. But I'm sure Bankok has a lot of ancient stuff to photograph... "Chok Dee" ~Good LUCK if your planning to bike and travel I recommend you go south on highway 4 from Bangkok stopping along the way. You can also hit some beaches at Hua Hin, Chumpoon, the hot springs in Ranong, and then on the coast to Khao Lak, and Phuket. The route between Chumpoon and Ranoon is popular route of bikes going thru the mountains close to the Burma border. me Sukotai i like it personally. yes, I know many - I live in Tak Province which is not too touristy.. Sukhothai is historical, and somewhat touristy but not hugely.. northern Petchaboon Province is very natural, mountainous, oh my, so much more and much in Tak,, better to contact me direct - kenk2424@yahoo.com - I am in bkk for the weekend and quite busy but willing to advise |
