For most things in bkk, go to Pratunam.. know what you can pay, bargain for volume, - you don't really need a guide - you just need to be able to be friendly and ask some questions - if you really feel you need one, I could probably hook you up with a friend there. I am upcountry and it is so easy, I would feel guilty abt taking any $$ for the service.. unless you want things specially made, you can do it all on your own - and even then - but contact me if you want and I'll see if I can hook you up.. good luck Others Its not so difficult. You will get a better price if you use a Thai person as a front to do the purchasing for you. A guide is good for this. This is not to say foreigners can't get the best price. Once a foreigner has lived in Thailand for while and can speak Thai - in other words they can be taken seriously as a potential repeat customer - then they can get a good price by themselves no problem. However, if you are just in Bangkok briefly then getting a local you can rely on (for example your guide) as a proxy will reduce the price. Imagine if someone who is obviously from out of town/a tourist went to a local market in your country where prices aren't marked, would they get a good price? Same in Thailand. Make sure your guide has a proper licence - there are plenty of people would offer to be 'guides' but who don't have a license. That's illegal. Also you can contact Dept. of Commerce at Thai Consulate General in your country. They will help you to find an export agent in Bangkok. It is quite easy actually. Head to Pratunam and look in the shops in that area and make your enquiries. The shop owners do know enough English to arrange deals with you.
