Qualifications for Teaching English in Thailand? |
Travel Info I teach english in the Caribbean and I am thinking of moving to Thailand, is it necessary to have a degree to get a job there? I have almost 2 years of english teaching but I don't have a B.A. Is it hard to get a job without one? Travel Tips If you have a tefl or toesl or toefl certification it would be easier. A BA is not required in Thailand. A working visa is required in thailand though and you have to have the school vouch for you. And most visitors visas are only good for 30 days. Unless your apply for a 60 day visa. Find a school that will accept you for employment other wise you may end up a immigration fugitive. :-)) Below is a website listing english language schools in thailand. I wonder if Taiwanese is anything like the Chinese they speak in Taiwan - neither of which will do you much good here in Thailand - - Yes, the ba is definitely helpful, but not always required - - but lately there seem to be issues of visas which must be obtained through the school - many of which are unreliable. I am watching capable friends go through these issues and dealing with school administration that might evaluate more by personality and appearance than ability. There is one German fellow here who is teaching English in the fashion of "I done went to school yesterday" - Now, I am upcountry and he is an older fellow and cuts a "respectable" appearance while thinking that Harry Potter is great literature, well, at least he can read.. So, yes, there is work here and will be more so as many of the current flock of young teachers are having visa problems. So, this is going to be your biggest issue. There is a website - www.ajarn.com - I think that is it - ajarn is teacher in Thai - when I learn how to say teacher in Taiwanese I will be glad to pass that along - - good luck - it is wonderful here - so much so that a friend of mine, teaching in Korea, is planning to come here at abt a 50% pay cut - - just a better lifestyle... If you don't have a BA, it is going to be quite tough. You might want to check out some language centers locally and get your TOEFL certification. The Thai government is worried about unqualified/fake teachers who buy their certificates and just recently 'passed' their exams (usually they'll go for those local TOEFL centers). you need to be screened/interviewed to get through this (its not so hard, just be honest). Bangkok and Pattaya are popular haunts for foreign teachers. You might also be interested in Chiang Mai. Good luck. Gilfriend's a government teacher.
