Where do I get an Ontario doctor to authorize my U.S. prescription refill in Guelph? |
Travel Info I recently moved to Guelph, ON from the U.S. I went to get my birth control prescription refilled and was told that I had to get a doctor from Ontario to give me a new prescription. The pharmacist told me to go to a walk-in clinic. I called the walk-in clinic that I found in the phone book 4 times today with no answer. I tried both after hour clinics this evening and didn't get an answer. I am not sure how the Ontario health system works. Can I call a family practitioner or GYN tomorrow? I don't need an exam. The original prescription came with my exam in February. I only need to get the refills authorized. Can anyone help me figure out where to go? My husband works for the university, so we have U of G insurance. We haven't been here long enough for the provincial health care to be valid for us yet. Travel Tips Hi. Here's what I would do: Actually go to a walk in clinic as your first step. Chat with the Doctor and tell him,her your circumstances. Another option might be to use one of those online pharmacies that actually accept US Doctor scripts Thirdly, I would phone the Ontario Medical Hotline. This is an excellent service that my wife and I have used in the middle of the night when our young daughter woke up with a bad fever. Have a chat with these nurses. They are great. Others First, the number the previous poster mentioned: 1-866-797-0000 http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/publ... It doesn't matter that your OHIP hasn't kicked in yet, as far as a doctor seeing you goes. That's a weird walk-in clinic. Or, maybe just a fluke. Keep trying there; that's about where you want to go... ...but I would definitely try going through the school's health services. http://www.studenthealth.uoguelph.ca/... At a _minimum_, they should be able to fill you in on walk-in clinics that're actually answering their phones. You can try calling family doctors, but it'll be hard (likely -- not guaranteed hard) to find one who's immediately seeing new patients. Gynecologists might want a referral, though. I notice the University's health services sees people on a walk-in basis; if you're nearby, just wander over. You can go to any Walk in Clinic though you will have to pay for a cash visit $40.00 or $50.00 you will get a receipt that you can send to your insurance. The Dr will be happy to give you a new RX. I work in a walk in clinic and we are so busy sometimes it is hard to answer the phones as the person working on the front desk has to register Pt's , put the Pt's in the rooms, clean the rooms, do the urine dips, do the referrals and deal with everything else. Which is hard when you are registering 60 Pt's as walk ins on a 6 hour shift. Contact your nearest Shoppers Drug Mart store and try there. Yes, then go to any walkin clinic, phones are always busy. Go early in the morning and ask to see the day doctor and tell him your story and take your meds with you. The whole point of a walk-in clinic is that you walk in, not phone. Go early in the morning to avoid lines, and be prepared to shell out for the visit unless you're already paying into the Canadian health care system. If you're not paying in yet, ask the receptionist at the clinic for info on how to subscribe. OR, find out if there is a clinic at the university for students and staff (there usually is). Dont call the Walk In clinic go by . You will wait a bit to see a doctor. Another way is to find a family physician who will take you and your husband as patients. THis way you can have you Rx done. Take the Rx to a pharmacy and see if they will fill it. |
