Friends in Canada, Why is Toronto Airport's Code letters YYZ? |
Travel Info It doesn't relate to the city like say, LAX does. Is there some logic behind this? What is the reasoning please. It's driving my husband crazy (and that is a very short trip). Travel Tips The Canadians made off with all the remaining 'Y codes which helps explain YUL for Montreal, YYC for Calgary, etc. read: http://www.skygod.com/asstd/abc.html... for the full story! Others actually there is no logic behind it it could make sense or it could make no sense at all , these codes are assigned by the IATA , to identify different airports , but there no system or whatsoecer to assign the three letter code , cairo egypt is CAI , which make sense , but Orlando Florida is MCO which make no sense i think Toronto is with the make no sense group All Canadian airport begin with Y It is a big country so they decided to just make everything start with the same letter so they are close alphabetically I used to work for AIr Canada All airports in the World must be reported and governed the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Then the ICAO, according to its own internal by-law, makes a "Three Letters" code for that airport that must be followed in all International publications and a huge aviation electronic industry International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) http://www.icao.int/ Major Nourhaghighi http://nourhaghighi.com The reason is that the first letter 'Y' tells you it is a Canadian airport. Vancouver is YVR. And the YZ tells you which Canadian airport it is. It isn't designed to make names or echo the popular name of a city, just to make a very clear declaration of which airport you are approaching. |
