Can I buy a Car in New York to move it to Canada? |
Travel Info I am a US Permanent resident, working temporarily in Canada. Taxes are about 15% for Cars in Canada. Can I buy a car in New York and take it to Canada? Travel Tips If you are also living in Canada, then you will have to import the car, which means duty and taxes, so you will probably end up spending more on it than if you just purchased one in Canada. Others ya why not. you do need to have it insured and licensed in the same place however. if your work is just temporary, it really shouldnt be a problem. One thing you have think about most deals either finance or lease, with importing the car to Canada, figure your going to have first have the cash to pay for it, and depending on the cost here, figure they will tack on not only the GST/PST, Dutys and an import charge. So the same $30,000 car here with all the added charges will probably cost you at least $10,000 more, plus warranties and dealer encentive would all be voided. The best thing to do is get the price quote, then send the info the Customs and Excise Canada, and see what the extras would come out to. I tried to buy a mattress in Buffalo, it was $250 for a King set, but after the taxes and excise charges it cost me almost $750, still half what I would pay here, I live just out side of Hamilton ON Well, if you are just in Canada visiting? You can bring a car from the USA for I think 6 months. If you are planing to stay longer than 6 months, that changes everything. YOu are no longer a visitor to Canada. You are a landed immigrant. It is too bad you weren't here a few years ago when the Canadian dollar was 64 cents US - the same car models were about 20% cheaper in Canada then and some car makers forbid in Canada sales to Americans. Also, Canada adheres to California emmisions standards. As Pichi says if you buy in the States and then register it here you will still be subject to duty and Federal and provincial sales taxes (as well as NY sales tax!). Best that you just keep NY plates and registration address and make sure you return to the States at least once every 6 months. But make sure that you comply with Canadian insurance requirements (your USA insurance company can give you a certificate). Canada police have the right to stop you and check, as my American bf knows too well!. yeah u can, but than u'll have to persoanlly drive it getting it delivered is not the best idea money wise :) have fun up to you |
