Visiting Toronto. Quite a few questions. Help please? |
Travel Info My friend and I are planning a trip to Toronto (early Sep) for our friend who's turning 19. None of us have ever been there before. He's gay btw so what are the best gay clubs there? And what are the best regular clubs? We're 19 and 20 yr olds. Can anyone recommend a good hotel for us. Preferably downtown and close to the nightlife and sightseeing activities. Oh and cheap enough, we're college students lol. I've been looking at the Courtyard by Marriott on Carling View Drive and it seemed like the best at a reasonable price. How far is it from the nightlife? Or, can you give a rough estimate of how much taxi fares are? Any African out there in Toronto (or people who have been to the clubs) know any African clubs where they play zouk, makossa, couper decale etc. music? We would LOVE to go to one of those? Also, anyone know good African restaurants? So many questions, I know. sorry:) it's just I would love the 3-day trip to be awesome! Travel Tips The gay district is on Church Street south of Wellsely. A great hotel in that area is the Day's Inn on Carleton -- it's a 3 minute stumble from Church Street. You should be able to find rooms for a little over $100 ... try a number of websites, not their corporate site. "Gaybourhood" has loads of clubs etc., but -- alas -- I don't party there. However, it's sweet to have a pint on a patio. Everyone's very cool. Obviously Pride Week is a huge event ... very mainstreem these days. Lula Lounge on Dundas West has loads of cool acts ... but it's not an African Club per se. Try searching for "African" under clubs on www.Toronto.com. Good luck. Other Travel Tips Here's some additional info... the hotel you're looking at is out by the airport - 12 to 15 miles from downtown Toronto - cab fare will run you over $30, though you can often get a shuttle bus from airport to downtown from some hotels for less or even free. There's not much nightlife (the kind you're looking for) out there. Many downtown hotels are even cheaper than the airport locations for instance Best Western on Carlton Ave is right where you want to go (see first answerer) and it's a decent price if you book online. Have a great trip! You will find more than your share of gay bars and clubs in Toronto - I cannot offer an opinion as to which is exceptional, since I am straight. As for African cuisine, there is a very good Ethiopian restaurant on Yonge St. in downtown Toronto; the name escapes me right now, but it's not difficult to find. Here is the Gay Tourism Toronto link. http://www.gaytorontotourism.com/... This link under heading "ON: Toronto " has a list of restaurants from the African continent. It wouldn't hurt to ask around a little when you get here to get second opinions on what is good and what is not. It also has e-mail addresses so you can ask the restaurants your questions directly. http://www.africa.upenn.edu/miscellany/a... Go to Church Street... |
