Nice Toronto Neighbourhoods?

Travel Info
Hello,

I'm looking to rent an apartment out either this Jan 2007 near end of month of Feb 1st.. anyways, I don't know too much about toronto neighbourhoods so hope someone can help.

Here is what I'm looking for:

rent: about $1000/month, 1 bdrm.
area: peaceful, preferably around some nice park. NICE area a must, so no drugdealers or prostitues and crime nearby obviously, etc..
transportation: close to TTC subway because I don't drive

thats about it.. I don't want to be too close to all the commotion and noise.

i've heard the following areas are alright: yonge and rosedale, yonge davisvile, highpark area, the beaches.

Thanks,
- Roland

Travel Tips
All are good areas that you mention - but the beach has only street cars or bus and is not that close to the subway. Also is a lot more expensive as it is a highly sought after are to live in. You could try Yonge and Eglinton and/or the Danforth area as well. High Park is also great.

Good Luck and welcome to TO!

Hello from Toronto:

Yes everything you have heard is correct. Also you might want to try Yonge and Sheppard area or Yonge and Finch. It is North uptown and no problems at all.
Just stay away from Jane and Finch, it is known for gangs and big problems in the area.

Good Luck
Roland, those are "better" area, but you won't find an apt much larger than a walk-in closet in those areas for what you want to pay. There are some areas of the city that you might want to avoid, but any realtor can help you with that. So could any potential employer, etc.

However, you don't have to live all that close to a subway station in Toronto. The bus service also works well, and with one single exception, every surface route runs out of or through a subway station.

Once you get away from areas that are closest to a subway station and areas that are downtown or in the ritzy areas, you will be paying roughly $900 - $1000.month for a one bedroom apt. This may or may not include basic utilities.

The first site that I'm giving you is to one of the 5 daily newspapers, the only one that I know you can access with out a on-line subscription. The second site that I'm giving you is to the city's interactive street map. Read the instructions, and plug in the address or the intersection, and you can see where any given address is within the city. To the right side of that map is an index that allows you as well to indicate the location of various city services on that map, including subway stations. And the third link takes you to the TTC service map.

I'm a native Torontonian.

Of the areas you listed, the only area you will be able to get a place for $1000 MIGHT be high park. The rest are higher.

Anywhere along the Bloor line of the subway, both east and west would be great. Keep in mind that places closer to subway also cost a little more (supply and demand). Anywhere east on the line is great - just stay west of Victoria Park.

The whole city is very welll equipped with TTC. There are street cars on many of the main streets across, King, Queen, Dundas that are much faster than bus or subway. Will you be working on the subway line too? Roncesvalle is a great trendy area (dundas/queen/bloor)

By the way - Toronto is quite well planned out - there are parks everywhere - no need to worry about that.

Myself, I live near a Go station in south Etobicoke (next to the lake), and I love it.
Nice areas, but I'd skip the beaches.
Once you've looked at the quoted websites, look at the Bloor / Dovercourt area. The Subway Station is "Ossington", plenty of north/south busses run from the station, and it's within walking/ TTC distance of plenty of great services, shopping, parks, theatres, universities, colleges, specialty food stores, laundromats, you name it! All the best!
