Where is the best area to be living on a working holiday in Toronto? |
Travel Info I am going to be living in Toronto for 12 months on a working holiday. Even though i'll be working some of the time, the main aim is to experience life in another country and have some fun! Therefore i'm after a neighbourhood with plenty of character that isn't 100miles from the center with rental prices that wont break the bank. Cheers, Owen Travel Tips Pretty much everywhere is accessible to the downtown core with public transportation. Toronto has lots of neighbourhoods with character: High Park/Roncesvalles is a little further from the downtown but is located around the Bloor West Village area with lots of shops and High Park and the waterfront if you're into nature. And you can still get right downtown in 20 mins or less by subway. Little Italy and the Annex are also good places with lots of shops and clubs and restaurants. Queen West is also a popular area with a good mix of shops and places to eat. Metropasses are available for $99.75 a month which can be used on all public modes of transportation so you might want to balance a cheaper apartment with a metropass or go for a more expensive place and plan on walking everywhere. Toronto is a walkable city, especially in the downtown core. You don't have to solely rely on the subway as streetcars are frequent as well so don't feel like you need to be right at a subway stop. Your best bet might be to look on Craigslist for shared accomodations. You can find somewhere as cheap as $400 if you're sharing or in the $900+ rate if you're looking to live alone downtown. My old roommate was on a working holiday visa from Ireland and liked living in the West of the city near High Park- you're close enough to all the action but far enough to feel like you have a bit of space. There's something for everyone, Chinatown, Greektown, Little Italy, hippies on Queen west, British, Irish, Scottish pubs, people from all over the world. WASPS are a minority. Expect to pay 1000 to 1500 dollars rent minimum. Everyplace seems to be an hour away from everywhere else if it's not on a subway route or walking distance. So come on over, find a temporary place, do some exploring for a couple weeks and decide what feels right for you. Cheers back. |
