Can someone tell me what Barrie, Wasaga beach, Collingwood like? |
Travel Info How's the web design business up there? raising a family? good for young professional? cost of living? friendly? how long of a drive is it to toronto? is it booming? what don't you like about barrie, wasaga beach and collingwood? if so what other areas would you suggest? Travel Tips I answered your previous question also. It happens that I am from Barrie originally. As of now, there is not a huge amount of employment in the city itself, and it is more of a bedroom community than a thriving buiness market. Not that there isn't great business growth in Barrie, it's just not as booming as it once was. In your line of work, Toronto isn't that far that you couldn't work remotely. Toronto is likely the biggest market you will find for web-based (design/marketing) industry. You can still get work in Barrie - just might not be in the black if you had to depend on local clients. I am from the East end, which is the "old" part, and where the "new" hospital, and college is. Quite lovely. To me, the North/West/South of the city are one suburb design after another. Quite sad, since Barrie is such a welcoming town with lots of history and personality. You wouldn't know it driving through on the 400. The biggest boom is certainly new homes, and shopping centres. That being said, it is still a lovely blend of urban, and small town feel. My parents still live there, and I'm there often. The kiddies can walk to school and you don't have to be afraid. :o) Collingwood is lovely, as are the surrounding towns of Meaford, Stayner, even Wasaga and Elmvale. Much smaller towns, much more neighbourly - people know all aobut you even if you didn't tell them. That kind of neighbourly is quaint but can grate on your nerves too. A friend of mine just moved back to Cwood with his young daughter after about 10 years away. They are loving it. The only thing I would think is that the summers are busy (tourists) and the winters can be harsh, so have lots of indoor games, a block heater, and a snowmobile wouldn't hurt. If you head further west and north of Cwood, on the map of Ontario, you will see Bruce Penisula/Niagara Escarpment. Port Eglin/Sable/Tobermory/Wiarton/... Sound. The secret jewel of Ontario by far. Others me myself... i love Barrie.... I'm trying to get my husband to buy a house there. We now live in Brampton and it sucks....i wouldn't want to raise m family here. Barrie is great...... very cold in the winter, but great too cause there's allot of winter activity's to do with your family. I'm not sure where you live now but i wouldn;t say that the cost of living its any different from anywhere else in the gta area.... but it is a bit cheaper to buy a house there...... u get more for ur money.... over the last few yrs it has grown ...the city is expanding to meet peoples needs.... and its only about an hour away from Toronto. I find it very clean and the people are so friendly.... not like in Brampton. Wasaga is a great place, I lived there for a long time. Lots of activities in the summer, quiet winters, it's cold, and alot of snow (snowdays for the kids). The only thing is that during summertime, the population goes from 16 000 to about 100 000 because of the tourists. Other than that, its a great little place. Not sure about business opportunities there, its a resort town, for the most part. Cost of living is pretty standard. People are very freindly there, and community stuff is always happening. About a 1 hour to 1 1/2 drive to Toronto. Another bonus is that there are alot of houses for sale. I would suggest the Blueberry Trails area, very quiet, or the Dunes. Not along River Road or near Beach Drive though. Perhaps its personal choice. Barrie is a pretty standard place aswell. More city-like, but there are soem nice suburbs. I've lived in Barrie, and it seems that people are cold there. Like they're better than you. Other than that, its a good place too. I currently live in Brampton, and it's very multicultural here, other than the majority of white people in Barrie. I think Brampton is a good place, not far from Toronto at all. |
