Do I need an international driver's license to drive in Canada if I am a US citizen? |
Travel Info We are flying into Toronto and renting a car to drive north 70 miles. Is my US driver's license enough or do I need to get an international license? Travel Tips Have used a U.S. license in Canada for years. Never an issue. Know several people who have been pulled over and ticketed in Canada with U.S. license, (Washington State), no problem. There may be an advantage to having one, likely as not, it's just an extra fee. Others no u dont need to do anything jsut have ur passport with u US license is fine. I've driven in six provinces and never had a problem. A passport or birth certificate is recommended for border crossings, tho. Just make sure you have insurance coverage, either from the rental company or your car insurance is up to date at home. If anything happens here and you hit something or hurt/kill some one ina traffic accident you better be cvered. No, have fun in Barrie. US Licence is good enough. The international drivers license is not an official document. It's just short of being a scam. You need to have a valid issued driver's license to drive in Canada, and Canada recognizes a US driver's license from any state. Some people got the idea to form a business selling an international drivers license which, if used alone when you are driving will get you arrested for driving without a license. Most law enforcement officers will not even look at one if you hand it to them. It is worthless. If any of you reading this still want to buy one, contact me and I'll sell you a hunting license for hunting ringtailed gollywampusses in Timbucktu. |
