Toronto suburbs? |
Travel Info I was wondering which Toronto suburb is the best to live in? It should be easy to get to downtown toronto by public transportation, fairly cheap (good area to rent), and not completely run down. In other words, a good area for a student to live in. Any help would be appreciated :) And if you could recommend a good area of toronto proper to rent in, that would be great as well. Travel Tips There are many smaller outlying cities around Toronto. I'll list a few. Markham: 10 minutes from the official city limits, but around 30 minutes from downtown depending on the traffic. 30-45 minutes to the airport if you take the 407. Around 60% white (don't know if that's of any importance to you), and towards the west side of the city there is a large Chinese community. Very interesting locales such as Asian supermarkets and Asian malls, as well as quiet caf茅s and bistros. The main street is also very quaint and nice looking lol. Quite a safe place to live as well. It's a rapidly growing city, so if you are looking for a new house that isn't THAT far from the city, this is it. However, keep in mind that since a lot of Toronto's growth is focused in Markham, along with the fact that it is so close to the city, in 10 years you will find that you are now living in the city anyways, which you probably don't want. It's still going to be a safe suburban heaven, but most of Markham was farmland just 10 years ago. Not anymore. It's growing at an alarming rate. Haha. Vaughan: Further west of Markham. Pretty much the same deal, except less minorities :S Personally I'd never move there. Not enough colour. LOL. But they have a large outlet mall and the biggest theme park in Canada... so... yay. ^__^ 20 minutes to the airport, and 45 minutes to the downtown core. Mississauga: Quite a large city immediately west of Toronto. The international airport is located here. About 30 minutes from the downtown core. Large South Asian community. And the mayor is like friggin 90 years old. Newmarket: Quite a ways up north from Toronto. The main street is Yonge street thouhg. It's actually quite interesting. Yonge Street starts downtown, and it goes uphill without any turns, so you can look down from Yonge Street in Newmarket and see the downtown core, even if it's around an hour away by car. Commute might take a while, especially in the winter. Almost an hour to the airport. Pickering: To the east of Toronto. It's where the nuclear plant is located. An hour to the airport, 30 to 45 minutes to downtown. Outlying cities that are kind of farther away鈥曗€?br /> Oshawa: A nasty town east of Pickering. Don't move there. My brother is studying at university there. The place looks so trashy. LOL. A nice downtown core that is only 2 streets wide and 2 strets deep. Once you get out of 'downtown', it's a wasteland. Hahaha. Hamilton: A large city just west of Toronto. An hour away fromt he airport, and a bit longer to get downtown. However generally people who live in Hamilton work in Hamilton as well, since it is a large city anyways. Niagara Falls: Almost 2 hours away. I'm sure you know what's to see there. For a map, jsut so you can get a feel of where everything is: http://maps.google.com/?ie=utf8&om=1&z=9... Others toronto is a very dangerous dirty area of canada, 98% of the toronto population is homeless, Toronto was amalgamated into one large city. Areas which we used to consider the "suburbs" are now part of the city, proper. (The downtown core is in the area which was originally called Toronto.) North York used to be one of the suburbs but is now part of the amalgamated TO. It might be your best area for a student to live because areas of NY are close to York University and areas are right on the subway to Ryerson and University of Toronto. Lots of people in the Willowdale area (near the Yonge Street corridor along which the subway runs) rent out rooms and basement apartments. This might be your best choice. The previous answer speaks about the GTA areas which are communities immediately outside of Toronto. Anyone living there spends about an hour (or more - depending whether or not rush hour service is running) commuting if they have to go to downtown. |
