Is the story of Stepha Henry being ignored? |
Travel Info I was looking at the news this weekend about Stepha Henry, from Brooklyn, NY, who has been missing since Memorial Day weekend. National media attention has been virtually non-existant, sadly, for this girl, who if I'm not mistaken, is a Trini-her parents were on TV begging for the public's help. How do we get the media to stop focusing on the 'breaking news' of Paris Hilton's jail time, and focus on this girl the same way they focused on the other young woman from Kansas last week who was unfortunately found dead? Why is it that young black women seem to be ignored by the media?Let's take a few minutes out of the time that we spend answering questions on this forum to send an email to our local news affiliates begging them to run the story on this girl-one of our own Caribbean sisters. http://www.miamiherald.com/460/story/131... http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/msnb... http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/200... Travel Tips I read the news everyday online and NOT ONCE did I read a story on her or any mention of her. I heard about it today in the NYC area because they happened to be talking about it on the radio (and a discussion ensued about the lack of coverage). In this day and age you would think that everyone is equal (if not all the time, then at least when its important like say a missing person). They mentioned that MSNBC was going to do an interview with the detective in charge of the case. After she drove to the studios and waited for almost an hour, she was informed that they would not be conducting the interview...instead more photage of that dmn blond heiress was shown. What a disgrace. And actually if you go to MSNBC and type in Stepha Henry, nothing comes up...or actually 2 hits which she shares with a story about how much teens spend blahblahblah. WHAT A DISGRACE!! News and media outlets should be ashamed of themselves. So should the public...are you all more concerned about Paris and how she's doing in jail than the life of a college graduate on her way to law school. The media today is becoming more interested in sensationalism and entertainment instead of providing us with actual news. This will only change if you have enough people boycotting, protesting and demanding equal attention. There is no mention of Stepha Henry (even on Yahoo News, you still have to search for her instead of it being top news). Natalee Holloway still gets coverage...but what about Stepha...or what about Phyllicia Moore who while on a trip was discovered at the bottom of the pool...or the young lady who disappeared on a busy street on her way to a job interview in the NYC area...or the woman who was found at the same time as Lacy Peterson, murdered in same way...do you know about them...most you will answer no...But you do know about Kelsey Smith, and Lacy, and Natalee, and JonBenet even the little girl missing in Europe. What's the difference in the stories? We all would love to say that color has nothing do with it...but look closely...the only difference is black and white. Nothing else to say except what a disgrace. My thoughts are prayers are with the Henry family and I hope that all turns out well for them. Others I heard about this and it's a shame that more focused is being placed on Paris Hilton going to jail than on a missing person. That's American for you, the put more interest in what is going on in rich celebrities life than focusing on what is really important out there such as missing persons, crime and violence, children being kidnapped, homeless people and the list goes on. I'm praying for Stepha and her family and hoping she will return home safely. I am with you on that but i do not think that being black is the cause of the issue. edit: okay, i heard the tape and honestly if that is the case, it is appaling indeed. There must be a system for which the media is accountable. Maybe a new media company can be started that actually reports important issues. Let us not ask and be angry about why things are but ask how can we make a difference? Actually it does seem to be true that the American media is much more likely to support a missing person case if it is about a young white woman...I've seen the issue discussed in articled on MSNBC's website, around the time Scoot Peterson killed his wife there were a lot of related cases covered in the media... I'll let our news department known about it...maybe if we connect with the family in Trinidad, international media will pick up on it. Just wanted to update you and let you know we covered the case and aired the story in our 7 o'clock newscast and it may be featured in our 9 o'clock newscast as well...on C News...I just hope they find her alive...thanks for the heads up! Yes the story of my friend Stepha Henry is being ignored And it is mainly due to the fact that she is black and is not a celebrity like the infamous Paris Hilton Stepha Henry is a very special, intelligent, and respectful young woman whom have never done anything like this before. So i feel it is very unfair that the story of her disappearance has not been made national. It is a shame that faithful viewers of well known broadcasting station such as CNN, and MSNBC feel that she is not important enough to broadcast It is good to know where the publics priorities are and they are sure not with the disappearance of Stepha Henry I do think it is bekuz of color, bekuz I'm in boston and i watch news all the time and i know nothing about this missing young lady. I do know too much info about Paris though. It is bekuz of color, because so many young black women dissappear and it either gets no play or just 10 seconds play. They spent some much media time on the run away bride, when at the same time many black women were actually being kidnapped and killed It made news last night (12.06.2007) Her mother has great faith in the police force. |
