Although, I wasn't born in Trinidad, I lived there for many years as a child and teen.

I had emigrated from Canada and I was absolutely floored that such a unique nation existed. I blame my initial indoctrination that all things North American were good and perfect and superior.

What I found was a land populated with brown skin people such as myself, who didn't stare at you as though you were from Mars (when I opened my mouth and the Canadian accent came out, that's when the funny looks started).

I learnt that Indian people travelled from India after slavery was abolished and they worked the land to make a new start for themselves. My previous sense of history was that I was a "Packi" and therefore should be left out of playgroups and parties.

I learnt that it was a Trinidad man who invented the steelpan, the only musical instrument invented in the 20th century. I learnt that Penny Commissiong was the first back Miss Universe. I was there in the stadium when our Strike Squad ALMOST made it to the 1990 World Cup finals. I was in Germany when our Soca Warriors played out a wish fulfilled.

I fell in love with the protective hills of the St. Ann's valley. My heart always leaped into my throat on the hairpin turns on the way to Maracas. My body was beaten into a state of bliss by the pounding surf. I woke up to smell of ripe mangoes outside my window. The trees and foliage sported every shade of green possible.

I was allowed to excel at school and not hide my intelligence. I learnt to sew, sing Spanish Christmas carols, cook pelau, play cricket, write award winning essays and conquer mathematics.

I found my first best friend in Trinidad. My parents divorced there and susbsequently re-married (other people). I gave my life to the Lord. I fell in love for the first time.

Trinidad&Tobago is my place of re-birth. The day I stepped on Trinidad soil is the day I started to live.

It's an island and located at the west side of the India. Also a country as well.
It's Trinidad and Tobago and we are known as "The Twin Islands" Trinidad is great alot more night life and bustle, whereas Tobago is more laid back and the tourist destination. Both islands have lovely, friendly people, great food, places of interest and events.
Born and raised in Trinidad, now live and work in Tobago.
