Travel Info Who are the "Bektases" of turkey, are they influential family in Istanbul? Travel Tips Bekta艧i is someone who follows Bektashism (Bekta艧ilik). Here's some info from wikipedia: The Bektashism (Turkish: Bekta艧ilik) is an Islamic Sufi order (tariqat). It was founded in the 13th century by the Islamic saint Hac谋 Bekta艧 Veli. The Bektashi order was greatly influenced during its fomulative period by both the Hurufi Ali al-'Ala in the 15th century and the Qalandariyah. The order was reorganized by Balim Sultan in the 16th century. Reverence of Imam Ali is central to Bektashi faith, common with Alevis and orthodox Shi'as. While it is convenient to view Bektashism as a blend of both Shi'a and Sufi concepts, the Bektashi Order contains distinct rituals and doctrines. Bektashis have always had wide appeal and influence as a discipline and people. Bektashism and Alevism are closely related in terms of both philosophy and culture. In present day Turkey, they are generally regarded as parts of an integrated Alevi-Bektashi culture. In post-Ottoman Albania, Bektashism evolved into a more distinct Islamic sect rather than a traditional Sufi order. Others I knwow one Cengiz Bektas, who is an architect, but I don't know about the family's influence. Why ask? It is a very commonly used family name around the country.... A lot of them are from the Black sea region, whereas Bektasizm is based in Mid-Anatolia. In the white pages of Istanbul, you can find hundreds of people with this surname, but it does not necessarily mean that these people are related. You should keep in mind that before 1934, turkish people were not using surnames. With the acceptance of the 'surname law' people started obtaining family names. And for some reason, Bektas was a widely accepted family name. The reason can be related to Bektasizm for sure. At the end, when you are talking about Bektases of turkey, you might be referring to hundreds of different families... so you have to be more specific.... If you are referring to Yilmas Bektas who is married to Ruffa Guttierez, Turkish media portray him as the son of international drugs smuggler Haci Muhittin Bektas.
