I met Irem... I guess Ay艧e is in love with me. etc etc <<<Eng. lang. teacher hey dude, I wish it was only with one of them... but not just one.... it is with three of them... I met Irem (Irem is a female name in Turkish)... I think Ayse has fallen in love with me (Ayse is also a female name in Turkish) :D :D :D bla bla...bla bla... ______________________________... As a matter of fact, the previous translation of "anlarm" would also be true, but it requires a little modification: "Oh dude, I wish s/he was with one of them... but s/he isn't... s/he's with three of them... I met Irem... I guess Ay艧e has fallen in love with me. bla bla... ______________________________... The thing is that, in Turkish we do not have any grammar structures that implicits the sexual difference when talking about a male or or a female (a third person). We have to know particularly with whom (or with which sex) the conversation has started. Then, within the conversation we use the term "o" (it's like the sexless "it" in English but rather than only subjects, "o" refers both subjects and male or female people) in order to refer that person. This message is an answer written for another message. Thus, the guys exactly know whom (which sex) they are talking about. But we do not know that exactly. That's why there are differences between tranlations. PS: in my opinion it is more likely that the guy who wrote the message is telling his dude his success stories. It seems that three girls are in love with him. One is Irem, who met him, one is Ayse, whom he thinks has fallen in love with him, and the other one is you. Good luck :) " |
