Istanbul is a very safe and "European" city... as long as you are in certain areas... There are a lot of hotels near the airport. Don't stay around there. The airport is far from everything and in a bad neighborhood. The hotels will be comfortable... but you will not be able to walk to anything. There are some nice hotels near Taksim Square. That is a decent area. It's also the start of the metro line and walking distance to a lot of shopping. Beskitas is the nicest area for hotels... you can find some with views of the water, surrounded by good restaurants, shopping and cafes. This part of town is always safe to walk around in. I would not suggest staying in "The Old City" area (which includes places like Topkapi and Fatih). The only exception may be Sultanahmet only because it is nicer and so close to all of the main tourist attractions. Also, there are nice areas on the "Asian side" of Istanbul, however they are farther from the main tourist attractions so I would not reccomend it. I'm an American living in Turkey... |
