Turkish music is the result of a process of almost 2.500 years, and its roots are lost in the depth of times. It's based on bysantine music, which on its turn was based in the music of ancient Asia Minor, formed by Greek and Persian influations. The ancient greek author Athineos describes it as slow and sensual, while there exists a complete description and depiction of the musical instruments used in those times, which, with some transformations are still in use. For example "Pandouris" which is the well known "tamboura".
Bysantines had a code to write and read music, which can be still read and interpreted, so we know everything about it. On the other hand, the bysantine terms to describe the rythms make refference to areas of Asia Minor, therefore we have the Lydian "way", the Frygian "way" etc.
Busantines founded music shools throughout the Arabian world, like the school of Hijage, and that's the reason why arabic music is so similar to bysantine and hence to turkish music.
Turkish music kept its bysantine origin and created new rythms and "ways", while the Palace and its Court needs for entertainment gave rise to more complicated and refined ones, with the use of skilled orchestras using a great variety of instruments. A great representative of this tradition is nowdays Omar Farouk Teblilek.
Unfortunately most people worldwide do not know the real turkish music and confuse it with the arabic music, which is somehow similar but far more simple, though it has been influenced by the turkish in the Ottoman times.
Greeks like Turkish music very much (as turks like greek music too) sinve they have both the same origins and in an extent parallel evolution.
As for me, Omar Faruk Teblilek is a great creator, while Sezen Aksu and Sertab Erener are great interpretors.

The music you mentioned is called " Turk sanat muzigi" and was mostly considered "the palace music". On the other hand there' another type which is may be more rich than that music: Turkish folk music which is also very unique.
