Why was Constantinople's name changed to Istanbul ? |
Travel Info Why was Constantinople's name changed to Istanbul ? Travel Tips Hi, On 29 May 1453, Sultan Mehmed II 鈥渢he Conqueror鈥? entered Constantinople after a 53鈥揹ay siege and the city was promptly made the new capital of the Ottoman Empire. And then, Constantinople's name changed to Istanbul. Istanbul means "蔚喂蟼 蟿萎谓 螤蠈位喂(谓)" (/is tin boli/) "To City and in the City". Regards Others Because it was better.....what a stupid question. Constantinople is a Greek name meaning the city of Constantin Istanbul is a name given by Turks out of a Greek expression The Greeks refereed to Constantinople saying 蔚喂蟼 蟿畏谓 螤蠈位喂谓 to the city "is tin polin" Turks took this expression and made one word Is-tan-bul Istanbul Abreviation...they were saying eis tin poli ei tin poli....Istanbul...In reality is Constabtinopolis, the city of the Emperor Constantinos, and once I laughed so much when i said constantinopolis, because a turk said"'ah you are going to take it back, thats why you call it like that?''But is it possible? It is just the name of the roman Emperor, dont be afraid guys... Check out the Wikipedia article about the city. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/istanbul... There are other names of Istanbul. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/names_of_is... Leonarda, Tolis and Tanju explained it. In those days "city" meant Constantinopolis (once in Cyprus city meant Nicosia, the capital). All the other cities/towns were irrelevant. There was just one "city", so to speak. Therefore, in Greek "stin poli" = in the city became Istanbul in Turkish. In fact, when the Ottoman Turks conquered it in the 15th century, they called the city "Konstantiniyye", meaning the place of Constantin, the emperor who rebuilt the city after a great fire had destroyed most of it. Today, fanatical Greeks use the name Constantinopolis to agitate Turks and implying that they will take it back. In return, thos Turks, whose national feelings are hurt by this, reply by saying it is Istanbul since 1453. It is just silly of course to discuss such things in the 21st Century. As Shakespeare once said in Romeo and Juliet, "what's in a name? wouldn't a rose still same the same if it weren't called a rose?" the Greeks did not lost Istanbul or Constantinople it was the Christians loss and i say they better forget about going back because they are not Greeks to fight now they are christian andrikela.. |
