You will get a visa up on arrival and it mostlly will not cost you anything. Some hotels charges you Dhs 1oo for the visa and Dhs 1o delivering charges to the airport. Many hotels provide a visa for free when you book online.

US citizens do not need visa. i think they can get it at the airport for around 50$
American citizens can get a visit visa,which is valid for 30 days, at the airport. However, one must be sponsored by a hotel or a relative/ friend (provided the person makes at least 4K dhs per month and has a valid residency). The paperwork for the sponsorship has to be delivered to the airport 1 hour before your plane arrives. A hotel can provide this service for a small fee. The information provided has to include flight arrival time,copy of the first few pages of your passport, and the validity of your passport being for at least 3 months.
Since you are holding a US passport, you will get an entry visa up on your arrival at Dubai airport and that will cost you AED 100 (USD 28 approx).

hmmm, for those answerers who are saying they need to be sponsored to get a visa, I was simply asked "who are you here to visit?" and I replied "friends" and was asked for a phone number of my friend and I told her. She didn't even write the number down and just stamped my US passport. I didn't pay a thing either.

As per this site under "US Citizen" it says:

US citizens (tourists and business people) may apply to the UAE embassies in the US for one to ten year multiple-entry visas. A sponsor is required and the visa will be granted free of charge. The maximum duration of stay should not exceed six months a visit.
