I am planning to visit Dubai next month. Should I purchase dollars or Indian currency is better?

Travel Tips
It makes no sense to convert your home currency first into another currency to convert it into Dhs when in Dubai.

Example assuming you are from India and have Rupees anyway:
10000 Rupees would be 221,83 Dollars
221,00 Dollars would be 811,69 Dirham - but -
10000 Rupees would be 814,73 Dirham

Means: to change 10000 Rupees into USD first and then into Dhs, you would loose 3 Dirham already.
Changing 100.000 rupees this way means a loss of Dhs 30 already not to mention eventually fees you have to pay changing currency back and forth.

Best thing to do: Come over here with your home currency and change this into DHS at one of the many exchange places. The first you'll find at Dubai Airport already

How to convert, you'll find here:

Other Travel Tips
The best person to ask is someone in Dubai.
However, it is my idea to have the currency of dubai with you plus some travelor's cheques of that directly if available from India.
If you are not visiting any other country then that should be fine..
Only Dolar$.
Dubai is in the United Arab Emirates.. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world though. UAE is a member of the GCC countries that includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Oman, and Qatar. I want to suggest to you to also visit Sllalah in Oman and to also visit Bahrain they are just Beautiful countries and people are super friendly. You can use the $ over there but you can also use any of the GCC currencies in any of the GCC countries the strongest being the Kuwaiti Dinar which equals $3.45 for 1 dinar. DO NOT EXCHANGE currency in the States ... Take the $ with you and exchange them in Dubai... will get a much better rate. Indian currency have no significance in the Middle East and not used.
You can use US$ everywhere and you can change to AED (United Arab Emirates Dirhams) approximately rate of exchange 1US$ =3.65 AED (which mentioning Dirham). For further information about Dubai you can visit http://www.godubai.com
