What are the rules & regs about crossing the Canada / U.S. Boarder??, Do you need a passport yet?? |
Travel Info I am a Canadian citizen originally born in Vancouver, B.C. but now living in Oregon after getting married, Been living here approx. 4~5yrs. I am also Native Indian with my dad being also Native born in Nebraska...I believe this gives me dual citizenship under the JAY TREATY??? Travel Tips If you are talking about entering Canada, you don't need a passsport yet. All the fuss is because the US has said anyone entering that country by air must have a passport effective Jan, 2007, and anyone entering the US by road must have a passport, effective Jan 2008. If you are married to an American citizen, you still have to apply for US citizenship - it doesn't come automatically. But if your Dad was born in Nebraska, and you were born in Canada, you would be eligible for dual citizenship. Not sure what the regs are on Native Indians - I believe they have special rights of passage across the border. That's something that you'd probably want to cehck out with the Canadian consulate, or with Immigration Canada. Others You have dual citizenship with Canada and the U.S.A. Also, you will have to have a passport if you FLY across the border (as does any citizen of either country). As of July (summer) 2008, you will need a passport ANY time you cross the border. Hope this helps. no passport needed unless flying in, if you are drving in you only need a drivers lisence and it never hurts to bring your birth certificate |
