What is the best route by car from vancouver to Calgary? Best for scenery and for accomodations/restaurants? |
Travel Info I will be in the area in a couple of weeks or less and would like to plan an interesting itinerary. Travel Tips There are several ways to travel from Vancouver to Calgary. The shortest is the Transcanada, (Hwy 1) to Hope, BC, then take Hwy 5 to Kamloops and back on Hwy 1 there. Note, Hwy. 5 is a toll road, $10.00 for cars. Or, from Hope you can take Hwy. 3 to Penticton and on through Vernon and Sicmoues (sp) where you come back on Hwy. 1 again. However should you wish to see the Frank Slide you would have to stay on Hwy. 3 through to Lethbridge. Suggestion, if you are a member of the automobile association go to their local office where you can get information and maps. Otherwise, go to Yahoo Maps, Mapquest.com or Goggle Maps. Have a good trip. Others I think there are two ways and the second less obvious way is really long and round'bout. Anyway, its called the trans canada highway. buy a map when your in Vancouver From Vancouver take Highway 1 past Hope. Around Hope, you will then look out for highway 5 (Couquihalla), take that for about 3 hours to Kamloops when you will rejoin Highway 1 and cruise on that until Calgary. Stops along Highway 1 after Kamloops include Frank Slide, Lake Louis, Banff, and the Okanagan for fruit picking. I have friends who have done the drive in 6.5 hours. My personal best was 8 hours last year. I didn't care much for the scenary as I do the drive every year, so for me, it's getting from point A to B in the shortest amount of time. |
