What document can i use to get my 1 yr old son back into america from canada? |
Travel Info I only have his Soc Sec card. No Driver's license (HE"S ONE!!!), haven't got a Birth Cert. or passport. I don't want to get stuck in Canada bc I can't "prove" that my son is my son. We are going to Canada for a Day trip this weekend and my wife and i have passports and SS cards. We are just afraid that we will be detained at the border bc we don't have the proper documents for our son. Any help? P.S. i am Native American (olive complected) so my ethnicity can be confused with indian, middle eastern (read: terrorist) and the potential for racial profiling does exist. My wife is Caucasian though. Travel Tips Without a birth certificate they are probably going to give you trouble. Starting in January 2007, anybody going into Canada/America will need a passport. My husband's family lives there. In the past we have just used their birth certificates. Starting January I will have to get my young children passports. I would call the border patrol station where you will be crossing over and ask them what to do. Maybe they can be of assistance. But I wouldn/t just go without checking first. Try driving to your local office to get a copy of his birth certificate. Others you have reason to be concerned. Racial profiling at the border certainly does exist. hopefully his soc card will be enough. how long does it take to get a birth certificate? Last time I went across they asked to see all of my childrens birth certicicates. Was he born in the U.S.? If so, contact the Vital Records office in the state in which he was born. You can order a birth certificate for about $5-$10 for him this way. Once you get the birth certificate, you can get him a passport. The rules are changing soon, so after January he will need a passport to get in/out anyway. So you might as well just get it now. If you're in a rush, you can pay an expedited fee and included a self-addressed express mail stamped envelope. I got mine in less than 2 weeks this way. |
