Why is the Vancouver International Airport in B.C. called the YVR?

Sounds more like the name you give a ground transit system

All major Canadian airports start with Y....kind of like a postal code.

At least Vancouver has VR after which kind of makes sense.

Other ones in canada make no sense whatsoever. Like Toronto, code is YYZ

All airports have strange initials.... you wonder where you are going...

The VR obviously stands for Vancouver.

I think they ran out of other prefixes and started handing out Y as the initial letters after a while.
