Does Vancouver have japanese communities? |
Travel Info and does Ottawa as well? Travel Tips yes, Japanese people have been in this part of the world since the 1890's . The traditional Japanese community("Japantown") in Vancouver was around Oppenheimer Park on Powell St. However in WWII, the Cdn government confinscated all their holdings and sent the Japanese into camps - and the neighbourhood fell apart. It is VERY run down now - pretty much "skid row" although the Japanese Hall on Alexander Street, Bhuddist Temple on Jackson, and a few sashimi wholesalers are still there. Every year in Oppenheimer Park they have the "Japan Days Festival" with taiko drummers, tako-yaki, and games. Nowadays, there are a lot of Japanese stores and ESL schools up around Robson and Alberni Streets, downtown. This is a very nice area, close to shops like Bebe and Betsy Johnson.. You will find most of the Japanese people who have been here for a while are more "westernized" - unlike many of the Chinese for instance, they speak excellent english and have embraced more elements of Canadian culture - they say this is because fo how they were treated during the war. Famous Vancouver Japanese include David Suzuki and Joy Kogawa. The Best Japanese shop in town has to be Fujiya at Clark and Venables for fresh cheap sushi specialty import foods and candies. I don't know about Ottawa. Source(s): Live in Vancouver, close to Oppenheimer Park, but my heart belongs to Japan! (Kyoto-ga dai suki des) Other Travel Tips Yes to both, and most other major Canadian cities as well. |
