I am 22 years old and want to move to Vancouver, BC...is it a good place to start a career? |
Travel Info I'm 22 and just finishing up my college in the united states. I have always had an interest in acting. I would like to move to Vancouver in hopes of catching a break. Does Vancouver recieve a lot of people trying to do the same thing? I know it's called "Hollywood North" but is it over flowing with people trying to become actors? Even if I dont find acting as my career how good of a place is Vancouver to live in? What does an average house cost? Travel Tips No, Vancouver isn't exactly overflowing with actors looking to catch a break.. at least, not like L.A. - I have a few friends who make a full time living as actors, but they are certainly the minority as most people need anotherr job to pay the bills. Also, there is something of a "glass ceiling" here - the majority of starring roles for the big features are cast-in-Hollywood imports.. most actors I know make semi-regular pilgramages down south, line up a bunch of go-sees in hopes of landing a big role.. Vancouver's a pretty good place to live - picturesque, fairly cosmopolitan, relatively mild weather, routinely awarded the title of one of the world's most liveable cities.. There's plenty of work for the next four years with the Olympics coming - esp. in the construction sectors... Real estate prices here are the highest in Canada - min $250k for a small apartment, $500k for a detatched house Others I think you have better chances of getting an acting job in Vancouver because Hollywood is just impossible now. But remember you will need to apply for a working visa if you are American. Once you have that you should be able to start working up there. I have some friends and aquaintances who have got acting jobs in the film industry in Vancouver. Like anywhere though, you will need to have 'some' acting experience, be willing to work hard, and remain flexible in your schedule. The flexibility can be hard when you are trying to survive while waiting for work to crop up. Good luck! Vancouver is a great place to live. As for geting a job as an actor, I have no idea. I work in construction and there is tons of jobs there. i don't know about acting, but living here is really expensive nowadays. Cheaper than LA, but still expensive. If you're not into nightlife and you're really active into sports, then Vancouver is for you. Otherwise, don't come to Vancouver if you constantly want to be entertained...nothing much to do other than eat, go to the movies or smoke weed. Very laid back city. There are a lot of cultural events though if you're into that. That's what I do to get entertained. Nightlife is weak. live in the area |
