What's there to do in Vancouver BC near GM place? |
Travel Info We will depart Whidbey Island, Wa around five pm Then we have the rest of the night to kill. We're staying near gm place. Then we need to fill the next day until a concert at 7 at gm place. What are the cool restaurants and shops around there? Plus I might be able to convince my dad to stay an extra night. In that case are there any stage play theatres near there? Travel Tips other poster was right about the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/theatres... there's also the nearby " Centre for Performing Arts " (http://www.centreinvancouver.com/)... that has among other things the illusionist David Copperfield this month.. pick up a free Georgia Strait newspaper - it'll list what's going on in town that week. the area you are staying is quite close to everything (FYI drinking age here is 19): within 5 - 10 blocks Granville St. - lots of pubs and clubs as well as some funky shops, popular with the younger set, ca get a little rowdy when the bars close between 2 and 3. One of the best (live music) clubs in the city called The Commodore is here.. farther down the strip if the old man likes Blues / R+B is an old timer favourite "The Yale" Pacific Centre - big indoor mall, some high end-ish shops as well as a Sear and Canada's venerable dept store The Bay Yaletown - converted warehouse district, kind of yuppie lots of overpriced shops restaurants.. If you feel like spending some cash check out the chic and trendy Opus Hotel's bar The Elixer - be sure to go to the washrooms with their frosted glass panels and video camera voyeur views (not as creepy as sounds) Robson St - choc-a-bloc with high end designer stores and resaturants: I'd reccomend Nikko (Japanese), Samba (all you can eat Brazillian style BBQ, they bring you meat on a sword and have hot girls in carnival outfits), Kobe (trad. Japanese Steakhouse - with the knife guy at your table), Saltlik (moderate priced steak house)... the place the other poster recomeneded Kishu (on Seymour) is a DUMP, I got food poisoning there TWICE! Gastown - the "old town" lots of funky shops and some nice restaurants - but pretty dodgey after dark (think Pioneer Square, in Seattle). The Amsterdam cafe is close to this area - but I would advise against it really, its not that easy to score there anymore and there's a good chance you'll get ripped off or have a lousy experience... Chinatown - like Gastown a little dodgey after dark, but some great cheap eats and cool shops.. "Floata" has the best seafood dimsum around.. "Hon's Wonton" is all round great w. cheap eats and my personal favourite hole-in-the-wall "The Gain Wah" has the best hot-and-sour-soup around.. all are on Keefer st. Other highlight include the SunYat Sen classical Chinese Gardens. lastly - if you just want a good old fashioned burger in a family restaurant - be sure to check out the White Spot, (Seymour and Georgia st or Robson and Thurlow).. kind of an institution around here - the "triple - O" sauce on their legendary burger is quite addictive! EDIT: oh your coming for Van Morrison (?) - well then maybe you and your dad MIGHT get a kick out of the New Amsterdam (pot) cafe and nearby BC Marijuana Party Headquarters both are on 300 block WEST Hastings (do NOT go east of there on Hastings!!). - they sell everything from books to bongs. Also, not walking distance from GM place but a cheap cab ride (<$10CAD) is Granville Island.. its the Public Market, much like Seattle's Pike Place - lots of pubs restaurants and shopping - but there are quite a few theatres down there (ArtsClub, TheatreSports) have fun! Source(s): live here. Other Travel Tips The only stage play I know of nearby is the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, which (I think) is located on Cambie. Nice restaurants nearby: 1) El Patio (Spanish) 2) Villa del Lupo (some Italian food, also steak but pretty expensive) 3) Kishu (very affordable, but very good Japanese; many times there I only pay $15 for two people because they have discounts, I think for just dining in or after 4pm, can't remember) 4) New Amsterdam Cafe (only if your dad wouldn't mind smoking pot with you) 5) Gotham (expensive steakhouse, about same prices as Villa del Lupo, but they give you a lot more food) 6) Mouse and the Bean (Mexican) Gp to Granville Island and then take the aquabus from there to the seawall at the aquatic center(about $2.25) and then walk the sea wall...the scenery is stunning..but parts of the wall have been closed due to the wind storms we have just had...so I am unsure of how many miles you could walk...but GM place is pretty close to a lot...You'll be near the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, The Ford Center for the performing arts, the vancouver symphony...you're pretty central. |
