My family is travelling to Seattle this summer and we wanted to take the ferry into British Columbia for a day. Would we need to have passports to do this or is a birth certificate sufficient?

No, you don't need a passport... the two times I've been we didn't even get asked for a birth certificate - a driver's liscense was enough... just don't try to take any fruit or veggies back to the US - even if you bought them in the US took them to Canada with you and brought them back... the US freaks out about Chilean fruit flies...
