Ong Jon is right. Also, Saigon has had other names before it was called Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City.

The Khmer called Saigon Prey Nokor, meaning "forest city". The Vietnamese originally called it Gia 膼峄媙h. The French renamed it S脿i G貌n, because it was more popularly known as S脿i G貌n by the time the French colonized Vietnam.

Most all cities and villages in Vietnam have had different names in the past. Hanoi had also been known as; T峄憂g B矛nh, Long 膼峄? 膼岷 La, Th膬ng Long, T芒y 膼么, 膼么ng 膼么, 膼么ng Quan, 膼么ng Kinh, B岷痗 Th脿nh and finally H脿 N峄檌 (which means between the rivers). Saigon will likely have different names in the future if history repeats itself. If you don't like S脿i G貌n as being Ho Chi Minh City, wait a couple hundred years, and it will change to something else.

Personally, S脿i G貌n will always be S脿i G貌n to me. I've called it that since I was a kid, and I will continue to consider that city as S脿i G貌n. Even my Vietnamese relatives consider it S脿i G貌n over Ho Chi Minh City.

after the viet nam / american war they renamed it to honor the "father of their country" "father of the revolution" ho chi minh.. his image is also on all the denominations of their paper money..it probably was fitting and proper to do so.. but i still like the idea most still call it "sai gon".. ps they also renamed every street in the south, many after war heroes... also fitting and proper...
well after the north won the war and took over, they wanted to put their mark on the city and rename it after ho chi minh himself.
the above are right i just wanted to add that people who live in VN call the city HCMC but call the downtown or district one area saigon.

I do not give a fuc*k what khmer or cambodian suc*ker people call my SAIGON is forest city or what ever,we invaded them and destroyed them all remember?SAIGON is always SAIGON to a true 85 milliones VIETNAMESE and 3 millions VIETNAMESE people around the world,i hate that name HCMC and i demand vietnamese communist goverment change it back and including the flag as font YELLOW and three STRIPES RED as original as stand for three regions of VIETNAM:north - central - south or MAU DO DA VANG(red blood and yellow skin as asian).I do not accept the communistm flag WITH RED BLOOD AND YELLOW STAR CENTER look so ugly and meaningless thought!someday all the street in SAIGON will rename back to the old day anyway and i pray for that so i could go back to my SAIGON lovely once was PEARL OF ORIENTAL! period and peace out!
This is a question that can truly only be answered by Vietnamese. Only they can know what it was like to suffer through the horrors of war, to have their lives changed drastically, to live in refugee camps, in many cases exiled from their beloved homeland or to live under a regime many consider opressive. Let someone who really knows and understands tell you why they still call it Saigon.
