What does Viet Nam means? |
Travel Info What is the origins of the name of the country? Travel Tips The name of the country comes from the Vietnamese Vi峄噒 Nam, which means the land of the Viet people in the South (Nam). Others in the Vietnamese language, 'Nam' means 'south', and 'Viet' means the Viet people, and the place of the Viet people. The origin of the name is a little complicated. Basically, when ruled by the Chinese, it was called An Nam. After independence, it was called Dai Co Viet/ Dai Ngu or Dai Viet. Vietnamese Emperor Gia Long changed it to Viet Nam in 1802 (he wanted to change it to Nam Viet, but the name was also an ancient Chinese kingdom, so they switched the words). The name was briefly changed in 1838 to Dai Nam. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/history_of_... Vietnam means "the land of the Viet people in the South (Nam)."
