I will be traveling to Christiansted St. Croix to work. How safe is this area?

Travel Info
I have heard St. Croix is dangerous. I have heard that other workers have gotten robbed. I have heard two versions of a worker being killed with a machete. I have heard that the St. Croix people do not like white people. On the other hand my father-in-law who is black did not have a problem. What is the real truth about St. Croix? Christiansted?

Travel Tips
There is crime anywhere and everywhere in the world. Live your life and hope for the best experience wherever you roam !

well i was born and raised in c/sted st.croix some places are dangerous but it is the company u keep the people are great people to be around if you are in to drugs you will find problem in the town area but if your not you'll be just find try to stay of the streets after 10pm ghost come out at night(lol). st.croix is just like every other westindian country .just keep to yo self and don't try to fall for the scams.
love my home land
like u said u have "heard" STX is a beautiful and comfortable place 2 b. I have lived on STX all my life and I love my home. Tourists have been robbed. They will go 2 the beach and leave their personal items on the shore and go in the water by the time they come back their cameras, $$, and such has disappeared. But Christiansted is much more safer than F'sted. As any1 would kno dont travel by urself on foot late at night. Other than that it iz wonderful. We dont have racism in the islands Black---> White but in St. John white ppl have did alot of wrong to us black ppl. I have traveled and experienced racism where white ppl r the majority. So if u really want 2 work come to STX i doubt u'll regret it.
MYSELF...........BORN AND RAISED CRUZAN!!!!!!!!!!! V.I.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It really upsets me when I "hear " people talking about the Virgin Islands like that. You could be robbed where ever you go. You could be robbed in your own hometown. However, a lot of times workers come to the Virgin Islands thinking that the same scams they run back home can work here. It is always very easy for a traveler to say he was robbed opposed to him saying I didn't pay the dealer for the drugs that I took from him or I got really drunk and started acting out of control and got into a bar fight. Time and time again people come to the Virgin Islands with this concept that this is the worst place to be. All you have to do is act responsibly and respect others and your time here will be fine. And as for your friend, tell him that I said if the Virgin Islands is so bad why do they continue to come and work here. Why don't he stay where he's from and work for wages there. It's obvious the VI is the place to be, because the money is sweeter here. So tell them to stop telling lies on the VI.
Like anywhere else, there IS a chance that you can be robbed on St. Croix. But again, that can happen anywhere.
Being killed is a bit extreme though. Most people who are killed on St. Croix are usually involved in illegal activities. On rare occasions you will find that the murder was a domestic dispute gone bad. As far as Crucians not liking white people thats not true either. You may find that locals on St. Thomas and St. John are more receptive to white people, but that is only because there are more white people there than on St. Croix.
Your safety depends on the time will be working, what kind of work you will be doing, and where in Christiansted you will be. For example, if you're going to be bartending downtown and getting off between 1 and 3. I wouldn't linger too long after work. But if you're going to be working downtown in a gift shop from 9 to 5 or so, you should be fine.
St. Croix has the reputation as being the most crime ridden of the Virgin Islands, but the truth is that at the end of the year when you tally up all the homicides, robberies, etc. it is equal to St. Thomas and sometimes slightly less.
I suggest you see for yourself. Its highly unlikely that you're going to be shot down in the street or butchered with a machete on your way to work. St. Croix really is a lovely place.
