I am wondering if i need a passport to travel to the virgin islands?

Travel Tips
If you are a U.S. citizen you do NOT need a passport to travel to/from the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Others
You need a passport to return to the United States from the Virgin Islands.
No, you do NOT need a passport to travel to or return from USVI. The islands are US territory. We were just there last week and only used our driver's license from Indiana as ID when we were at the airport for our return flight (although we had our birth certificates - no one asked for them). You need a government issued photo ID - so the driver's license works.

Here's the quote from the US Dept of State website:
"The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory. U.S. citizens returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the United States and do not need to present a passport. U.S. territories include the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands."

If you island hop to the British VI - then you might need a passport. Check the Dept of State website for details. Have a great trip!! The islands are absolutely beautiful!

I would definately get a passport that way you won't have any problems. When we were in St. Martin we took a day trip to Anguilla Island which was just a short boat ride away. If we did not have passports they wouldn't have let us get on the ferry. It is better to be safe than sorry. If you are going to St. Thomas, St. John is also just a short boat trip away and you would hate to have your options limited once you get there and may decide to do things like this.
US Territory. Not needed. Make sure you have a photo id and copy of the birth certificate.
no, no pasport requiered....and for Karen P's benefit.......St Martin is French, just like Paris; St Maarten ( the other half of the island) is Dutch, just like Amsterdam. Anguilla is a seperate and independent country, just like Canada or the Bahamas are to the US so OF COURSE you need a passport.

St John is a US Virgin Island just like St Thomas and you no more need a passport to go between the two than you would to go from Nantucket to Martha's Vineyard.

Now, if you want to go from the US Virign Islands to the BRITISH Virgin Islands, three miles away...........you are going to a foreign country and yes indeed you need a passport.

Hope this helps.
