Best things about vacationing in St Thomas? |
Travel Info Visiting soon best places to shop-where are "must sees"-any safety issues or scams to look out for?-water sports? Travel Tips I could fill a book with all that is to do...for one thing, be sure to take the ferry to St.John and even to the BVI if you choose... St.Thomas has plenty to do...Red Hook offers charters for sailing or they will take you out on a boat for sunset cruise or a day sail...or longer if you wish. St.Thomas in the downtown area has shopping, lots of it, but the cruise ship crowd also will be shopping with you...and it is crowded that is why a trip to St.John is a fun thing to do...the parks are there and you can snorkel and not in very deep water :0)....it is a great day trip and the ferry is a fun ride.,,,not to long. You can also take a ferry (check schedules as they go by "island time" some of the time) to Puerto Rico..on Thursday and return on Sunday... I have vacationed on St.Thomas and Tortola BVI and also sailed down there...loved it and will be back again. Skyauction.com is great for there auction for Long Bay Beach on Tortola....they also do resorts on ST.Thomas too. Check them out if you haven't made your accomodations yet.....bring plenty of the #30+ suncreen with you....the sun is very strong! Some of the properties on St.Thomas are "all-inclusive" and have sunfish, windsurfing etc. as part of the free things they offer for their guests. Snorkeling equipment is often tied into the charters at Red Hook..(also visit "Duffy's Love Shack")....If you go out at night use common sense..like any city you would be out in in the dark..go to brightly lit areas and take a taxi if it is late...I've heard the "waterfront" at night in St.Thomas is a place to stay away from - but again, use common sense...'Iggies Beach Bar and Grill at the Bolongo Beach Club in St.Thomas is a fun place with a really nice owners and customers - outdoor beach dining, they have karoke nights etc. check out tripadvisor.com for comments on resorts and overall general feelings about safety issues. I have not had a problem and have returned often. Enjoy - Source(s): tripadvisor.com own traveling Other Travel Tips Just going to the island should do the trick. I went to st. Thomas last summer. Great island but take a boat over to st johns and visit Trunk bay and Cinnamon bay. They were my favorite and not too crowded. 1) the weather is perfect 2) Charlotte amelie shopping district and Havenview (cruise ships) shopping district 3) Frenchman's Reef Marriott resort 4) a ferry boat ride to St. John Island 5) I'd stay away from Red Hook, nothing but overpriced restaurants and not much else 6) Cruzens Rum St Thomas is a nice place with a lot of shopping and beautiful beaches! Of course you'll want to see Meagans Bay, Sapphire Bay and Coki beach on a NON-cruise ship day. shopping is fun in Charlotte Amalie but again you dont want to be around when there is a cruise ship in port. We had a nice day shopping at Tillett Gardens...very artsy with hand made ceramics and stuff. One thing we did was to find a taxi driver, (if you aren't getting a car)get his card and use him for ALL of your driving trips. You will really get to know a local person and they will show you some of the more "off the beaten path" places to go. Also, ours ended up charging us less since he knew he had all of our business for the week and we could count on him to drop us off at the beach AND come back to pick us up at an appointed hour rather than try to find a cab when we were ready to leave. We have even kept in contact with our driver friend for the past 2 years. St. Thomas has the best known beaches in the world....it is also well known for its diamond/gold shopping... |
