Do I need a passport to travel to St. Croix if I am a U.S. citizen? What about for re-entry?

Travel Info
I am traveling to St. Croix in September, and while most info I could find online said I did not need a passport since it is a U.S. territory, a friend said I would need one for re-rentry into the mainland. Will I have time to get one if I apply today and have it expedited by paying the extra $60?

Travel Tips
Everyone is WRONG>>>>>>the UNITED STATES Virgin Islands are the UNITED STATES and American citizens DO NOT need a passport to travel to here, any more than you need a passport to travel from Boston to San Fransisco....

the link is www.travel.state.gov....read the whole thing!

Now, you do pass through Customs to get back to the mainland.....a weird quirk in the law dating to when the US bought the islands from the Danes....but all you need to show is a state issued picture ID...

NOW IMPORTANT NOTE!!!!!: Some airlines are asking for passports on the lame excuse that "the flight might have to divert".so check the airlines as well... Source(s): live on STT 30 years
Other Travel Tips
You should have your passport by then, if you dont the new rules is that the receipt for filing the application will suffice.
Yes, you need a passport to re-enter the USA from St/Croix, you have plenty of time though. And just yesterday is was announced that if your passport has not arrived in time for re-entry all you have to show is your application for a passport. This is because there is such a back-log in issuing passports.
Yes you need a passport. There also was a article in the local news that said you would be allowed to travel to us virgin islands as long and you have a receipt showing that you have purchased a passport but don't physically have it yet.
well it takes about 10 weeks for a passport to be processed so i suggest you get one about now ~ and just to be safe you should get one anyways ~ and people from the U.S. Virgin Islands are Americans and U.S. citizens we're just not a state

on your trip don't be closed minded we don't have a lot but we make a living
