Are there any direct flights from New York to St. John, USVI? |
Travel Info I am trying to plan a little getaway here but completely confused. I cannot find any flights......How do you get to St John? Is there an airport at all? Travel Tips I have lived in the USVI my entire life so here is the real skinny on your getaway plans. First, there is no airport on St. John. The island is TEENY-TINY, 75% National Park and not at all configured for even a Cessna-type plane landing strip. The way you get to St. John is through St. Thomas. This is where you need to PAY ATTENTION! Your getaway might be through the Westin Resort on St. John. If it is, they should have informed you of the shuttle they run from the St. Thomas airport to Crown Bay Marina (2 minutes away) where there is a WESTIN FERRY service that is included in your overall cost for the room you have booked. In the event that you are booking your trip to St. John "a la carte," REALLY PAY ATTENTION NOW! Once you arrive at the Cyril E. King airport on St. Thomas, you will be sort of herded towards the large air-conditioned taxi vans that are parked right behind the baggage claim belts. WARNING! THIS IS A LITERAL RACKET THAT IS CONDONED BY THE V.I. GOVERNMENT! Of the four major taxi associations on the island, somehow the "V.I. Taxi Association" is the sole provider of taxi transport, period. Be prepared to wait for the entire van to fill, even if that means waiting for another aircraft to land and unload after yours. DO NOT FALL FOR THE DRIVER OFFERING TO TAKE JUST YOU AND YOURS TO RED HOOK FOR THE ST.JOHN FERRY RIGHT AWAY! YOU WILL BE CHARGED HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS (what the driver would have made if the cab was absolutely full!) Otherwise, you should be prepared for a long journey from the airport on the west end of the Island to the ferry dock on the east end of the Island, as your taxi van will stop at every hotel he/she needs to, in order to drop off other vacationers. Since you used the term "little getaway" in your question, I can only assume it is for you and your significant other. I still STRONGLY urge you to contact the place you are staying while in St. John with a request for hassle-free inter island transport. Otherwise, your vacation might start poorly, which just plain sucks! Others Try Travelocity, they are fabulous. http://blondeheiress.com/pages/32/index.... No, there are no direct flights. There is a direct flight to St Thomas from JFK on American Airlines. Then take a taxi to Red Hook, and from there you can take a short ferry to St John... Or, you can fly to San Juan, then another flight to St Thomas and then the ferry..There is a ferry terminal in Charlottle Amalie (downtown St Thomas) but no boats to St John from there. Only to St Croix or British Virgin Islands. St John is lovely, quiet, great beaches and snorkelling, relatively little nightlife..How the Islands used to be..Enjoy!! Oh, you can call the USVI tourist office in NYC and get schedules..but ferry is quite frequent..and taxis from airport are really "share a vans" with fixed prices per person posted. We traveled there last year and took the following flights... NYC to St. Thomas... we then went over to West End and stayed a few days at Secret Harbor Beach Resort. Just 2 minutes by taxi you can then reach the West End Ferry and take a very short/ and inexpensive trip to st. John. |
