How much does it cost to live in St. Thomas, USVI? |
Travel Info I'm thinking of moving there. How has it been since the hurricane? How much would it cost to ship a car from a) Boston or b) Miami? Travel Tips if you move there, you should open a waffle house... they don't have very many places that you can get food after 10pm and that sucks... especially when all the drunk people are wandering around... that's my big business scheme... Others I went to St Thomas 2 days ago and the food is expensive. I love St Thomas. Especially the waterfront where you see the cruisers. The people are nice and very kind. Very good prices in jewerly. Check the website below... USVI seems like a fun move. I want to move to another island, though the paperwork for USVI would be easier. Good luck & hopefully your car has great brakes:) http://www.vimovingcenter.com/car/... I moved to St Thomas from Boston 33 years ago, so here's the story: We're a small island in the middle of the ocean so EVERYTHING is shipped in, and so it costs about 50% more than the mainland...a gallon of milk is $4.00 for example, gas this week is $3.50.....electricity is 3 times that of the states, so figure an electric bill for a one bedroom apartment if you run the A/C of about 350.00 a month; and figure at least $1000.00 a month for a decent 1Br apartment. in a safe area as well. On the other hand, you don't have to pay for heating! Since Hurricane Marilyn in 95 we have had hits by 4 good sized storms with minimum damage...we WAY overbuilt after 95 and it shows...and, on the other hand, you don't have to shovel snow! Being a tourist based economy, everything slows down in the summer and its harder to find a job then; and with the huge number of transients, be prepared for a bit of aloofness from folks until we see your face around for awhile and get that you're serious about being here.......as far as shipping a car.Tropical out of Miami or Crowley out of Philly are your only bets......cars are more expensive here than stateside, but after shipping and import duties, you might find that nothing travels easier than money. There is a species here known as island cars that would get you shot by the Mass State Police but are perfectly acceptable here...maybe a few less than normal seats and windows and a lot of rust....but only $1000.00 and will last a year or so. Be prepared for 3 months without work and settling in and you'll be OK.... Man, yankee-sailor makes it sound like the most expensive place on earth to live! I disagree with him completely although he has been there for a very long time. I do not live there personally but have friends that do and bartend. Yes they said it is was expensive to live there but I think 350. a month for ac is a bit of an exaggeration and rent. To live in a place like that you definitely have to make some sacrifices and realize that to live in such a beautiful atmosphere does not come cheap! But too me it would be worth every penny! Good Luck in your decision! |
