Is it expensive to live in st. Thomas? |
Travel Info I am 21 years old living in south Fl. I have lived here my whole life and would love to adventure a little. I fell in love with St. Thomas last year on vacation and would definetly move there. I have a little money saved up but I am sure if the Virgin Islands are unreasonably expensive and also is it hard to find work there? Travel Tips As a resident I can tell you that yes it is quite expensive to live here. We have to import everything so the cost of groceries, clothing, furniture and appliances are a bit more expensive than they are on the mainland. St. Thomas is the more city-like of the US Virgin Islands so the cost of living is as high as major cities such as NYC and DC. Expect to pay between $700 - $1000 for rent if you want more than one bedroom. Buying a house? We're talking Hollywood prices: $200,000 and up. Unless you're in the service industry, the job market is pretty dry. That's why it's not uncommon for people leaving here to have more than one job. About the only thing that's cheap here is alcohol. If you're interested in relocating, I suggest you do so during the peak season (which is everything outside of hurricane season that starts this month). That's when there are more opportunities available. I've linked a great site if you're interested in relocating to St. Thomas. Source(s): http://www.vimovingcenter.com/ Other Travel Tips No its not expensive and it depends on what type of job you are looking for...need more details from the virgin islands I met a rasta mon in St. Thomas, lived right next to a killer beach in a tent, and ate off the land. Does that help? you share the same exact story as me, it isn't really expensive, i loved it too! The previous posters are right. I've lived here for three years and everything is expensive.(Except for the booze, about $5 for a fifth of local rum and cigarettes, $14 a carton) The cheapest gas right now here is $3.31, and a gallon of milk will cost you about $6. Remember, an island is a rock in the middle of the ocean-nothing grows there. Everything has to be imported from the mainland. If you are serously thinking about moving here, I suggest you do a Pre-Move Visit to get an idea of what it's like here. As far as jobs go, it all depends on what you do. But I will tell you I'm glad I decided to move here, It's the best thing I've ever done for myself. Good Luck. |
