Would you look down on me if I moved there? |
Travel Info I've been all over the world and the one place I absolutely fell in love with was St. Thomas. Do you have a problem with outsiders moving there? Someday I'd love to live there. I consider myself a landlocked beach bum and would just love to have that view everyday. And I'd like to go back to that bartender that complained about her job and tell her that a cubicle is MUCH worse than a cay. So, any mainlanders or island born people okay or against it? Travel Tips I've lived in St. Thomas here for three years. I have always felt accepted by the locals here from the moment I stepped off the plane. Although, there is a very small part of the population here that feel that by people like me from the states, living and working here, we are taking an opportunity away from them. But most of the locals realize that 95% of the people that come here on vacation are from the mainland US, and they need people like us to provide them with the level of service they would find in the states. (for example, a guy visits from NY who's used to waiting only 10 minutes for something; gets pretty frustrated when that NY 10 mins. turns into 45 mins. on "island time") Most of us "statesiders" stick together, primarily because we are away from our homes, families, etc. But I wouldn't feel unwelcome walking into a local bar, store, etc. The locals here usually stick together and they are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. They will usually always welcome you into their island. St. Thomas is mostly a melting pot of people from various caribbean islands. Because most people born here eventually go to the states after they finish school to find work, raise families, etc. However, some people from the states find it hard to get used to the slower pace of life here and they can't deal with it and leave. Everything takes longer time here than in the states like gocery lines, banks, post office, etc. So if you can get used to that, you shouldn't have a problem. Others Go. Who cares what people think. St.Thomas is beautiful. I'd go in a heartbeat if I could. Remember, you only get one life, make the best of it. The Caribbean is a place where you will find the most unbiased people in the world. Come on down. |
