Travel Info What impact does the tourist industry have on the Virgin Islands? Travel Tips Tourism is the largest industry in most all of the islands ... so the impact is that it is their livelyhood. Others This is a pretty involved question and requires a more complicated answer than can probably be outlined here in a few paragraphs. At this point, the Virgin Islands export and produce very little and most of the economy is based on tourism or on the industries that support tourism. From the Hotel and Tourism private sector standpoint, the tourism market can be divided into to main markets - land-based travel and cruise line travel. The cruise lines are very important to the downtown area of St. Thomas and the excursion providers, but have less of an impact on St. Croix and St. John. St. John has a very strong tourism product and high average occupancy in it's hotels as a result. The recent passage of legislation requiring a passport for travel to all destinations in the Caribbean actually does not affect the Virgin Islands. Unfortunately, this is information has not been made widely available. That is the primary industry of the Virgin Islands. Without tourism there would be little else to sustain the economy. |
