What can you tell me about living in the US Virgin Islands?

Travel Info
My husband and I are considering moving there. I'm just curious to know what other "mainlanders" that have made the move experienced. Do you like it there? Anything you wish you'd known before moving there? Thanks for any help!

Travel Tips
I lived in St. Thomas from 2003-2006 when I moved there from Cleveland. I could tell you that it was a culture shock at first, but once I got adjusted to the local customs (Drive on the left, slower pace of life, slow service at banks, post offices, etc.) I was fine. They use US currency, the US postal system, and as long as you are a US citizen, you don't need any work permits or visas. The Local People are very friendly and some will go out of their way to help you sometimes. (If someone sees you walking down the road, they will offer you a ride) The beaches are amazing and Magen's Bay has been named one of the ten best beaches in the world. The roads are steep and hilly in most places so most people drive jeeps or 4x4s. One other thing about The VI is that EVERYTHING is more expensive here than in the states. From rent to groceries to gas prices because everything has to be imported from the US or Puerto Rico. The only cheap thing there is Liquor($5 for a fifth of good rum) and cigarettes ($14 a carton) because there is no federal tax or sales tax. The Islands get a bad reputation for their high crime rate but most of the crime is local on local and in the three years I lived there, I never got robbed or mugged. Just use common sense and good judgment (Don't go looking for trouble and you won't find it) and you'll be fine. Exercise the same caution and good judgment that you would use at home in the US. Overall I was glad I did it and I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to experience a different way of life.

The answer above is very self-explanatory. It's very expensive and slow paced. The least popular of all the islands is St. Croix, St. Thomas has all the hype.....unfortunately.
