Travel Tips
I seriously considered moving there myself. I wanted to move to St. John, but found it nearly impossble to find a job that had nothing to do with resort management or food service. It's even hard to find anything other than that on St. Thomas, which was my next option. Cost of living is extremely high and employers don't seem to pay as much for typical jobs as they would on the mainland. I guess thats the price you pay for living in paradise. These are the average price ranges for montly rent in St. Thomas. St Croix costs a little less and St. John costs a little more.

Efficiency Studio $800-$1100
Cottage $1000-$1800
1 Bedroom Apt. $950-$1550
2 Bedroom Apt. $1200-$1800
2-3 Bedroom Condo $1700-$3500
3-4 Bedroom House $2500-$5000

Everything costs more, even most foods.

If you're serious about a move, check the website below. Its the VI Moving Center guide. It'll be able to answer all your questions. Its extremely informative, has FAQs, job listings, costs of living, etc, etc...............everything. Theres also a few books out people have written about the move they made, what they did and how it worked. That would give you more insight to actually living the island life. Good luck.

Other Travel Tips
I live on St. Croix and the cost of living is not as high as that last person said. I pay $700 for a 2 bedroom house electricity included. I pay $300 A YEAR for car insurance. I wash my hair in the rainwater and I dry my clothes in the sunshine all year long. Food is another story- it is as expensive to cook at home as it is to eat out- so I don't do very many dishes. There is the second or third largest oil refinery here and a lot of people are hired for 6-month terms from oil refineries in Texas and the "south" US. The restaurant industry is huge and most of my friends work at bars, etc. But I believe that there are a lot of lawyers offices downtown and that sort of thing... The main opportunity here is for entrepenuers!!! There are many needs that aren't being met- and any good businessman knows that is the recipe for success.
As far as recommending moving here- it is very hard to get used to the changes, things are done in entirely different fashions. Just like anywhere else- for every upside there's a corresponding downside. I feel we happen to have a lot of upsides - so you know what that means! Personally, I love it here. Give it at least 6 monthes to decide.

I think where you at is better than going to the Virgin Islands, In terms of getting a job. In most cases you will definitely make less money in the USVI, but it is a very nice place to live.
You can search the local classifieds in The Virgin Islands Daily News here: http://classified.virginislandsdailynews...

Or in the Island Trader here (Mostly has info on apartments for rent, items for sale, cars, etc.): http://83.138.169.18/openpagesuite.aspx?...

Or another website: http://www.vimovingcenter.com has tons of island info as well as a message board where you can ask locals questions.
I lived there from 2003-2006
