Where is a good suburb to stay in while visiting Washington, D.C.?

Arlington or Bethesda. Both very close to downtown via metro. Both have numerous malls and restaurants. Arlington would probably be the best choice because its directly across the river from downtown and there is even monuments and places of interest in Arlington.(Arlington National Cemetery,Air Force Memorial,Pentagan etc,etc....) Bethesda is more of a family community, but the downtown area is like a city. Easy access to DC but a little longer than Arlington.
