Nice suburbs of Washington DC?

Travel Info
I am living in suburbs of Boston right now with my two young sons. I am a single mother and I am being recruted by my job to Washington D.C. Of course this means Ihave to move my entire family. Can you tell me if there are any safe, affordable, suburbs that are close to the city? Thank You!!

Travel Tips
Pretty much any suburbs in Montgomery County, Maryland are nice. Fairfax County in Virginia is also nice but I grew up in MD so I'm more familiar with those suburbs. I would check out Silver Spring (probably more affordable) and also Rockville. Bethesda is nice too but expensive. Of course, these are all relative - anywhere in the DC area is expensive. But like I said, anywhere in Montgomery County is nice and is safe. Montgomery County has one of the best public school systems in the country and also other good local services (libraries, parks, etc...)

Others
There are many nice suburbs around DC but depending on what you are looking for the prices are typically pretty high. There is also the option of commuting as that is what a majority of people do who work in DC. The further out you go the more affordable nice housing is.
I would suggest the Aspen Hill area in Montgomery County. As for affordable, it all depends on what you mean by affordable. Boston is a super-expensive place for housing and the DC area is also very expensive. You can rent a house around $3400 per month and up. To buy a house will cost at least $475,000.

The Metro system is very handy for commuting.

Do not go to Prince George County or to Washington DC for housing. Neither are safe. Schools are terrible in both.

Contact a Century 21 realtor or ReMax realtor in your city and ask them for a contact person who sells in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Having went to school in Boston - I'll draw analogies between the two suburbs. I list the MD suburb and then the VA suburb

Cambridge = Kensington or Arlington
Newton = Potomac or Vienna
Brookline = Silver Spring, Bethesda or Rockville or Tyson's Corner
Arlington = Aspen Hill or Sterling
