DC or San Francisco? |
Travel Info Would you chose to live in Washington DC or San Francisco? I want ot eventualy get into a non-governmental Org. Both citites have many. I wish to work in International NGO's though, and i know that most major offices are on the east coast. But I do love SF... I don't know can you give me some pro's and Con's of living in both cities? Other than weather. And I know that both are pretty expensive to live in. give me all sorts of answers, not jsut work related (althugh that would be usefull too) Travel Tips I live in the bay area and have visited the DC area many times. Bay Area Positives - Great diverse area. The city has so many things to do (arts, museum), excellent restaurants, and top level education. My favorite thing about living in this area is that Tahoe is only three hours away (for those that love snow activities), Monterey is only 1.5 hours away (excellent aquarium, quaint town, excellent golf courses south in Carmel), and Napa valley is just across the bay. I love the weather in the bay area. Rainy generally NOV - MAR (not continually) and beautiful summers. It can get quite cool in SF due to the fog. Downside - Horrifically expensive to live here. Housing, gasoline, transportation, food, everything costs more here. Traffic gets to be quite annoying, especially if you are trying to go into SF or leave during the evenings/mornings and the weekend nights. DC Positives - I love the culture here too. The history is what makes it so different than SF. You have soooo many great museums (Smithsonian!!), and you are at the center of the life of the country. I think considering what you are going into, the east coast is a more fitting location.. Negatives - I really felt like once you leave the city there wasn't much to do. Others Being somewhat conservative, I'd choose to live in the northern and western parts of the DC metropolitan area. It's a very safe area and the standard of living there is very high. The atmosphere there is very friendly too and there are a lot of historical places to visit. No tall skyscrapers are there. On the other hand, SF is very clean. It's weather is great throughout all the year. People there are even friendlier than in DC. Standard of living there is so high and the seafood restaurants are superior to anywhere else in this world. Actually ther's more fun in SF than in DC. The cons of DC would be the weather extremes (snowy in the winter while very hot and humid in the summer). High crime rates in the eastern and southern suburbs. Higher prices in the good areas is also a problem there. The cons of SF would be the large numbers of homeless people, unrivalled percentage of same sex couples, frequent earthquakes and ascending and descending streets; which makes you need a hydromatic car for transport. Though I'd choose DC, my father thinks SF is far more beautiful than anywhere else in America. Good Luck! Both are very beautiful, and much to do in each city. Maybe you need to consider where your family lives, and how they would travel to visit you and you to them. I lived in DC and did not find the people to be very friendly, I have been to some of the beach cities south of LA and found the people to be extremely friendly. Good Luck with your decision, and your job search...you will need to make big bucks in both cities!! Well, I KNOW DC very well. I would not want to live there or surrounding areas as they are very well populated with crime |
