Travel Info What are good sites to see while in Washington D.C. for a week? Travel Tips First, the National Mall with the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, the Capitol building, the Vietnam Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the WWII memorial. The White House is also nearby. I think all of that would be 1 day. I'd do 1 day on each Smithsonian museum... especially the American History, Natural History, and Air and Space. They're all huge and have so much to see. The Jefferson Memorial and the FDR memorial... and the tidal basin there... The jefferson memorial is my favorite and the FDR one is cool too (walk through it the right way, unlike me... it starts at the side farther away from the Jefferson memorial). The tidal basin has paddle boats which aren't too expensive and it was a lot of fun to paddle around. If you have transportation out of the city, Mount Vernon is cool... it's kinda a drive, but you can tour the house and all the buildings including visit Washington's grave... and there's a lot of demonstrations there to show how things were used 200 years ago. Holocaust museum... really depressing, but pretty important. get tickets beforehand. otherwise you'll wait hours to get in, especially if you get there during mid-day. Arlington Cemetery with the tomb of the unknown soldier... really awesome. Spy museum... one of my favorites! There's so much to do and it really depends on what you're interested in. Plan out your day based on how long things are open. Have fun! Others Vietnam memorial, the white house, the national mall, the Lincoln memorial, go to WashingtonDc.gov Definitely the Smithsonian museums. It consists of about a dozen different museums: Air & Space, African History, Natural History, etc. No admissions charge and located close to several subway stops. You know the standard monuments: Washington monument (get there early for tickets to go up), Lincoln memorial, the new World War II memorial is gorgeous, the Jefferson memorial is right on the tidal basin, etc. You know the Smithsonian museums have tons of options: American history, Natural history, Air and Space, Native American, Holocaust, Corcoran gallery of Art, the portrait gallery just reopened with all the presidents' portraits included. Try things other than the standard: The National Zoo in Cleveland park is awesome and free (with a baby panda to boot). The Spy Museum by Metro Center has an admission fee, but so worth it. Try Ford's theater for a show (Meet John Doe is playing now) and in the basement is a museum all about the Lincoln assassination. People sometimes pass over Arlington cemetary, which you should not do, especially since it's right on the metro line. Mount Vernon is a short drive into Virginia, and has new George Washington Exhibit. Paddleboats on the tidal basin are a fun and relaxing activity. DC now offers a Segway tour which I hear is fun. Eat at Old Ebbitt's grill, especially the crabcakes. Most importantly, take it slow and don't try to do everything all at once. You'll tire yourself out and won't enjoy yourself as much. There is a bunch of walking involved, so wear good shoes! |
