Travel Info Will be in washington dc for july 4, what can we expect what should we all see going to gettyburg on 7 july? Travel Tips In DC, expect lots of people and security lines. The parade is in downtown DC, but neighboring suburbs have quaint parades as well. If you want to go on the Mall for fireworks and festivals (the Smithsonian Folk Life festival occurs at this time and is really worth seeing - Jamestown VA is one of the highlights this year), you have to enter through certain gates so you can be screened. If you aren't going to bother with the Mall, I recommend Georgetown waterfront or even the Iwo Jima memorial in Arlington for fireworks viewing. I applaud your choice to go to Gettysburg too (I worked for the park service there for a year while in college.) Not a lot of people make both trips. Expects waits for restaurants, especially the nicer ones like Dobbin House or Farnsworth House - both worth the wait, by the way. Its amazing how much room a hoop skirt of a re-enactor takes up at a restaurant - so it creates longer wait times. If you're into Microbreweries - Gettysburg has two, and they're great. Do yourself the favor of going to the visitor center and hiring a park ranger guide to ride in your car with you as you tour the battlefield. They are full of stories and can really personalize your experience! If you're into the touristy things, also go on a Ghosts of Gettysburg walking tour, Land of Little Horses, and check out the Civil War Wax Museum (lots of re-enactors camp out there). If you get "Civil War-ed Out", take a trip to the Eisenhower Farm - its where the President spent his retirement. For a slower pace, visit the college campus - its a very pretty, and small, campus. Source(s): I lived in Gettysburg for 4 years, and currently live outside Washington, DC Other Travel Tips Expect heat, humidity and thunderstorms. Parking is the pitts. You can check out the Folklife Festival on the Mall and there will be a 4th of July parade on Constitution avenue. Lots of vendors and you can see the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials as well at the Vietnam one. You can also paddle around the Tidal Basin. It will be crowded. If you plan to see the fireworks, pack a chair or blanket, lunch and lots of water. Don't forget to bring $$$$ You'll enjoy Gettysburg. Don't forget to see the Presidents Hall and the battlefields. Nice walking town. There will be tons of people in D.C. on July 4th, and since Gettysburg is close it will be super crowded. It's fun but you should expect to have to wait a lot in the reastaurants, museums, and any other lines that you will stand in. There is a lot of walking at Gettysburg so unless you want to take a guided tour, you will probably be able to get around there well. Have lots of fun! I live near D.C. gerzygrl had a great answer As far as DC is concerned, last year we had an absolutely torrential storm with possible tornados on July 4th. That was the worst weather we have had in many years, but be prepared for a thunderstorm, especially if it's really humid. We always have a chance of them. Last year, everyone was evacuated from the National Mall (imagine how awful THAT was) and there was a lot of confusion as to how to deal with the security checks in the museums. Fortunately, the Park Police convinced them to just stop security checks because everyone from the mall side actually had been checked in order to get into the mall area. And that's great you're also going up to Gettysburg. It's a fabulous place! |
