Travel Info Is this airport close to the center of town? I am planing to visit for the first time and have a choice of two airports, this or Washington(DCA). Travel Tips Dulles is about 25 miles outside the capitol. If you want to be closer to the city DCA is just outside the capitol in Arlington, Va. It's on the Potomac River and it's in the city. Both are good airports but DCA is much closer. Source(s): Been there. Other Travel Tips Dulles is a good 25-30 miles away. DCA is on the other side of the Potomac River from the Capitol Building. You'll be closer flying into Reagan Airport (DCA). Not only is it a lot closer to DC, it's a lot easier to navigate through, and you'll get a nice view of the Potomac River when you go to leave. Used both Dulles and Reagan Airport. There are 3 airports serving the metro D.C. area - Dulles, National and BWI. If you shop for your ticket on the internet you will find significant cost differences between these airports. National is closest, by far, to D.C.
