How far is it really...?

Travel Info
Okay, I am in Amherst county, VA, about 20 miles north of Lynchburg, and I would really like to go out to Colonial Williamsburg. All the maps on the internet tell you to go up 29N and then over on 64E through Richmond (I've taken this many times before over to Richmond), and it says it's about 3 hours. Someone told me, however, that if you take 60E to 288N to 64E that it's only 2 1/2 hours. Is this true? Has anyone ever driven from this area to Williamsburg, and if so how long did it take you? Please I need to know tonight.

You can probably do both routes in about 2.5 hours if you hit no traffic... Taking 60 only cuts about 13 miles off the route, and it's obviously a slower road overall than I-64, so it'll probably end up being a wash.
