You can't go to D.C. without checking out the obvious spots. If you don't mind the wait then the White House is good. All of the monuments are nice to visit and learn a thing or two. The Smithsonian is really cool, natural history, air and space etc. museums. Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier is a great place to see. Of course all of it is free. These might be obvious sites but I think they are first on the list for D.C.
Others

You have to go to the smithsonians, the holocaust museum, cross the patomic river, go see the cherry blossoms, white house, capitol building, you needs at least two weeks if you don't want to be running the whole time
Please be more specific, like what.....going to the museum, clubs, dining, family act ivies. What? I'm 30 and I know alot about md dc and va. BAD and GOOD. I love this place its so much to do and see :)
